THE POWER OF THE COPENHAGEN CRITERIA

Abstract

The following paper examines different aspects of the Copenhagen criteria, which, albeit well-known and often cited, are far from self-explanatory. Historical facts and an analysis of several official documents permit a better understanding of the spirit and purpose of these criteria, which play a decisive role in the integration process. The theoretical part of the paper is rounded out by a case study presenting a general overview of relations between the European Union and Croatia.
